Aghaboe Abbey

The ruined abbey at Aghaboe in County Laois traces its origins to around 560 AD, when St. Cainnech — known in Scotland as St. Kenneth — founded a monastic community here that would serve as the seat of the Bishops of Ossory for stretches of the 11th and 12th centuries. Augustinian canons took over in 1234, but the site was refounded in 1382 by local chieftain Florence Mac Gillapatrick as a Dominican priory, again dedicated to St. Cainnech. Dissolved in 1540 during the Henrician Reformation, it was one of countless Irish monasteries lost to that upheaval. The standing remains date primarily from the 14th-century Dominican phase and sit quietly in the Irish countryside — free to visit, modest in scale, and largely undiscovered by mass tourism.
