Abbaye Saint-Roman

Abbaye Saint-Roman is a cave monastery carved directly into a limestone outcrop near Beaucaire in the south of France, dedicated to Saint Romanus of Condat. One of the rarest examples of early medieval troglodytic religious architecture in France, the complex preserves monk cells, rock-cut tombs, and a chapel hollowed entirely from the living stone — with almost no constructed masonry. Listed as a classified historic monument, it is open to visitors Tuesday through Sunday with a midday break. The hilltop setting offers broad views across the Rhône valley and the surrounding garrigue.
