Akbar-Mausoleum

Akbar's Mausoleum, located in Sikandra on the outskirts of Agra, is the funerary complex of Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar (1542–1605), the third and greatest Mughal emperor, who expanded the empire from Kabul to Bengal and was celebrated for his policy of religious tolerance. Unusually, Akbar commissioned the tomb himself during his lifetime; it was completed in 1613 by his son Jahangir, who altered the original design. The complex is the largest tomb enclosure by area in India and blends Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic architectural motifs — a deliberate architectural expression of Akbar's syncretic worldview. A formal Charbagh garden divided by four water channels surrounds the red sandstone and white marble structure. Today deer and monkeys roam freely through the grounds, and the multi-tiered tomb offers a quiet contrast to the busier Mughal monuments nearby.
