Igel

The Igeler Säule, standing in the small Moselle village of Igel near Trier, is the best-preserved Roman funerary monument north of the Alps. The roughly 23-metre tower was erected in the early 3rd century AD by the Secundinii, a prosperous Trier cloth-trading family, and is covered top to bottom with carved reliefs depicting mythology, trade scenes, and domestic life. This density of figural carving makes it an unusually rich document of Roman provincial culture in Germania. The column stands directly beside the village road with no barriers, giving visitors a striking immediacy to a monument of this age and significance.
