Akrotiri

Akrotiri is one of the Aegean's most significant Bronze Age archaeological sites, buried on the southern tip of Santorini. Around 1627 BC a catastrophic volcanic eruption entombed a thriving Cycladic city with strong Minoan influence under metres of ash — preserving it with a completeness that rivals Pompeii, though nearly a thousand years older. When archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos began systematic excavations in 1967, he uncovered multi-storey buildings, sophisticated drainage systems, and exceptional frescoes depicting seafaring scenes, exotic animals, and daily life. Notably, no human remains have been found, suggesting the inhabitants evacuated before the eruption struck. A modern protective roof now shelters the ruins, and visitors traverse elevated walkways directly above the street grid and house structures of a city frozen in the Bronze Age.
