AKW Lubmin - Informationszentrum

The visitor information centre at the former Greifswald nuclear power plant in Lubmin documents the history and ongoing decommissioning of one of the GDR's largest energy projects. Officially named VEB Kernkraftwerk 'Bruno Leuschner', the plant came online in stages from 1974 and was shut down immediately after German reunification in 1990, partly due to serious safety deficiencies identified by western inspectors after 1989. The site is now managed by the Entsorgungswerke für Nuklearanlagen (EWN), with full dismantling expected to take several more decades. The centre offers a rare look at Soviet-era reactor technology, Cold War energy policy, and the complex realities of nuclear waste management — one of the few places in Germany where all three converge in a single walkable site.
