Albert Cuyp market

The Albert Cuypmarkt runs for nearly a kilometre through De Pijp and is the largest daily street market in the Netherlands. Established in 1905 and named after Golden Age painter Albert Cuyp, it grew up alongside the tight brick housing built around the Heineken brewery. About 260 stalls sell fruit, vegetables, fabrics, cheese and street food; the mix of old-school Dutch traders and Moroccan-Turkish vendors reflects the neighbourhood's social history. Visitors come for warm stroopwafels off the iron, raw herring sandwiches and bitterballen straight from the fryer. Open Monday to Saturday 9 to 17, best visited in the morning before crowds peak.
