The 9 Streets

The Nine Streets are a grid of short, narrow lanes connecting Amsterdam's four principal canals within the UNESCO-listed Grachtengordel. Most of the slim gabled houses date to the 17th century, when Amsterdam — then Europe's wealthiest trading city thanks to the VOC — packed these very alleys with cloth merchants and haberdashers. Today the area is defined by independent boutiques, vintage dealers, and small design shops rather than chain retail; the scale of the buildings means large brands simply don't fit. Cycling or walking is the natural pace here: between shops, canal-side cafés serve brunch well into the afternoon, and chestnut trees and houseboats frame the views along every waterway.
