Aleksoto funikulierius

The Aleksotas funicular is one of the oldest continuously operating funiculars in Europe, having carried passengers since 1935 up the hill above the Aleksotas district — built just four years after Kaunas opened its first funicular on Žaliakalnis hill. Both lines were constructed during Lithuania's interwar era, when Kaunas served as the country's provisional capital and invested heavily in modern urban infrastructure. The ride itself lasts barely a minute, but the top station opens onto a panoramic view of Kaunas old town and the broad sweep of the Nemunas river below. Unlike many heritage rides repurposed solely for tourists, the Aleksotas funicular remains a functional part of daily neighborhood life, lending it a quiet, lived-in character.
