Aljaž Tower

The Aljaž Tower is a tiny cylindrical iron shelter perched on the summit of Triglav — Slovenia's highest peak at 2,864 metres — measuring just 2.4 metres across. It was built in 1895 by Jakob Aljaž, a Roman Catholic priest, folk song composer, and Slovenian patriot who purchased the summit for a symbolic ten guldens and had the tower erected as both a refuge and a national statement. Classified as a monument of national significance, it has become one of the most recognisable symbols of Slovenian Alpine identity. Reaching the tower requires a demanding mountain ascent — traditionally considered a rite of passage for Slovenes — and rewards climbers with sweeping views across the Julian Alps.
