Biosphärenpark Salzburger Lungau und Kärntner Nockberge

The Biosphärenpark Salzburger Lungau und Kärntner Nockberge is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designated in July 2012, covering the entire Lungau district of Salzburg and the adjacent rounded Nockberge mountains of Carinthia. The area was originally protected as a national park in 1987 and now serves as a UNESCO model region for sustainable development, where traditional alpine farming, low-intensity agriculture, and conservation are managed together. Visitors traverse wide, lightly developed alpine landscapes of open Alm meadows, glacial lakes, and ridge trails with sweeping views toward the Hohe Tauern. In winter, the region draws cross-country skiers seeking quiet trails away from the major ski resorts.
