Balgonie Castle

Balgonie Castle is a partially ruined tower house on the south bank of the River Leven in Fife, Scotland, roughly 3.5 km east of Glenrothes. Its keep dates to the 14th century and forms the oldest surviving element; further wings and outbuildings were added piecemeal through to the 18th century. The keep has been restored in recent decades, while the remaining structures stand as roofless ruins under Scotland's Category A listed building protection — the country's highest designation. The castle is said to have connections to the folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor in the early 1700s, lending it an additional layer of Scottish legend. Visitors today encounter a quietly atmospheric, ivy-draped ruin with views across the river — well off the main tourist circuit.
