Bamberger Dom

The Imperial Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George is a Romanesque kaiserdome whose four towers define the skyline of Bamberg's UNESCO World Heritage old town. Founded in 1004 by Emperor Henry II, it holds the joint tomb of Henry and his wife Kunigunde — the only canonized imperial couple of the Holy Roman Empire — as well as the tomb of Pope Clement II, the only papal burial site in Germany. The cathedral's most discussed artwork is the Bamberger Reiter, a 13th-century equestrian statue whose subject remains unidentified despite centuries of scholarly debate. Open year-round, with extended hours from April through October (daily until 18:00), and fully wheelchair accessible. The elevated Domberg setting affords broad views across Bamberg's roofscape.
