Bamberger Reiter

The Bamberger Reiter is a life-sized sandstone equestrian statue placed around 1225 in the north transept of Bamberg Cathedral, widely regarded as one of the great sculptural achievements of the Staufen period in Germany. Its identity remains unsolved: historians have proposed Emperor Conrad III, King Stephen I of Hungary, and a generic ideal of Christian kingship as candidates — an art-historical puzzle debated for centuries. Mounted on a console decorated with carved heads at roughly four metres height, the figure stands out for its naturalistic rendering of the horse and the serene expression of the rider, both remarkably advanced for the early 13th century. The statue is accessible inside the cathedral, which itself forms part of Bamberg's UNESCO World Heritage Old Town.
