Lugturm

The Lugturm is a surviving medieval watchtower from Dresden's historic ring fortifications, which protected the city from the 13th century onward. Its name derives from Middle High German 'lugen' — meaning to peer or keep watch — reflecting its original function as a surveillance post over surrounding terrain and city approaches. While later urban development erased most of Dresden's medieval walls, this tower endured as a rare stone remnant. It stands today as an understated fragment of pre-Baroque Dresden, largely bypassed by the city's later reinvention through Baroque construction and postwar reconstruction.
