Torre del Montale

The Torre del Montale, built around 1320 on a rocky spur of Monte Titano, is the smallest and most remote of the three towers that define San Marino's skyline. Unlike the Guaita and Cesta, its interior has always been closed to visitors — in the medieval period it served as a prison tower, and it retains that sealed, forbidding quality today. The approach is a steep cliff-side footpath with no tourist infrastructure, rewarding the effort with sweeping views across the Apennine ridgeline and, on clear days, all the way to the Adriatic coast. Together with its sister towers, the Montale has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage designation for the Historic Centre of San Marino and Monte Titano since 2008.
