Torre del Montale

Built around 1320 on a rocky spur of Monte Titano, the Torre del Montale is the smallest and most remote of San Marino's three iconic towers — and the only one permanently closed to visitors. In the medieval period it served as a prison tower, a function that left it architecturally austere: compact, almost windowless, and deliberately inhospitable. The approach follows a narrow cliff-edge path with no railings or tourist infrastructure, rewarding those who make the effort with unobstructed views stretching to the Adriatic coast on clear days. Together with the Guaita, the Cesta, and the historic city center, the Montale has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Visiting on a quiet weekday — the path between the second and third towers sees noticeably fewer crowds than the main piazza — gives the place an atmosphere of genuine medieval isolation that the other towers no longer offer.
