Altschlossfelsen

The Altschlossfelsen near Eppenbrunn in the Palatinate Forest form the largest rock formation in the Palatinate region — a sweeping band of red Buntsandstone running at roughly 365 to 380 metres along the German-French border. The name alludes to a medieval castle site now barely traceable above ground, lending the rocks a quietly enigmatic atmosphere. Protected as both a natural monument and a cultural heritage site, the formation is one of the most geologically significant exposures in the Pfälzerwald Biosphere Reserve. Marked hiking trails lead to the rocks, rewarding visitors with open views across forested ridges into neighbouring France. The fractured sandstone blocks attract recreational climbers, while the narrow passages and overhangs between boulders make it an engaging destination for families as well.
