Château du Falkenstein

Burg Falkenstein is a 12th-century rock-castle ruin perched on a sandstone ridge near Philippsbourg in the Moselle département of Lorraine — distinct from several other castles sharing the same name. The fortress was built directly into a natural outcrop roughly 120 metres long and up to 22 metres high, at an elevation of 386 metres, with the sheer rock face serving as an integral part of its defences. The castle was destroyed in the 17th century, most likely during the Thirty Years' War, and has remained a ruin ever since. A few hundred metres to the east lies the ruin of Burg Helfenstein, creating a rare double-castle ensemble on the same ridge. Today the site is a classified historic monument and is accessible via hiking trails through the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park, with the rocky plateau offering open views across the forested Lorraine hillscape.
