Roman amphitheatre of Catania
AmphitheatreArchaeologyExcavation Site+4
The Roman amphitheater of Siponto stands near the ancient harbor city located south of Manfredonia along the Apulian Adriatic coast. Siponto served as the maritime gateway to Arpi, one of the most powerful cities of ancient Daunians, until a combination of earthquakes and malaria led to the settlement's abandonment in the 13th century and the founding of modern Manfredonia nearby. Only foundation walls and scattered masonry survive today, but the site's quiet, largely unvisited setting within the broader archaeological area gives it a distinctly melancholic character.
