Amiternum

Amiternum was a prominent Sabine settlement and later a thriving Roman municipality in the Abruzzo region, situated a few kilometres northwest of present-day L'Aquila. The city is notable as the birthplace of the Roman historian Sallust, born there in 86 BC, which places it firmly within the intellectual circles of the late Roman Republic. Its most tangible remains are a Roman theatre and an imperial-era amphitheatre, both protected as an Italian national monument. Abandoned during the Middle Ages — its dressed stone quarried for surrounding villages — the site today is a quiet archaeological landscape where visitors can trace the outlines of the ancient city plan among exposed wall rings and column fragments, with the Abruzzo mountains as an uninterrupted backdrop.
