Archaeological Society of Athens

Founded in 1837, only a few years after the Greek state itself, the Archaeological Society at Athens was the first Greek organisation dedicated to preserving the ancient heritage. Its excavations at Mycenae, Epidaurus, and on the Acropolis made classical archaeology a Greek science.
