Acropolis of Athens

The epitome of the ancient world: on Athens citadel rock, Pericles built a temple precinct in the 5th century BC that still defines our idea of Classical Greek architecture. Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike - Iktinos, Kallikrates, and Phidias set standards here for two and a half millennia of art history. UNESCO World Heritage since 1987.
