Arcumeggia

Arcumeggia is a small hillside hamlet in the comune of Casalzuigno, Varese province, tucked into the pre-Alpine foothills of Lombardy. From the 1950s onwards, the village was deliberately transformed into a so-called paese dei pittori — a painters' village — when prominent Italian artists including Aligi Sassu and Carlo Carrà were invited to paint large-scale frescoes directly onto the residential facades. The result is an open-air gallery embedded in medieval village architecture, walkable in a single unhurried stroll through its narrow lanes.
