Amthausgasse

Amthausgasse is a short historic lane in Bern's medieval old town, threading between Bundesplatz to the west and Theaterplatz to the east — linking two of the Swiss capital's most significant public squares. It sits within the UNESCO-listed Altstadt, whose defining feature is the Lauben: continuous sandstone arcades that have sheltered pedestrians since the 13th century. The name's origin, the Amtshaus (city administrative office), relocated to Hodlerstrasse 7 in 1900, leaving only the toponym behind. The lane today functions as a quiet shopping and pedestrian connector, part of Bern's remarkable six-kilometre network of covered arcades.
