Arthington Viaduct

Arthington Viaduct — also known as Wharfedale Viaduct — is a 460-metre sandstone railway bridge spanning the wooded valley of the River Wharfe in West Yorkshire. Built between 1845 and 1849 for the Leeds and Thirsk Railway, it passed through successive mergers into the North Eastern Railway (1854), the London and North Eastern Railway (1923), and finally British Railways (1948). The multi-arch sandstone construction is a fine example of Victorian railway engineering and is protected as a Grade II listed structure. From the valley floor the viaduct makes a striking sight, its stone arches framed by the surrounding hills, with riverside footpaths offering close-up views from the Wharfedale landscape.
