Ouvrage Schoenenbourg

Ouvrage Schoenenbourg is one of the largest and best-preserved publicly accessible works of the Maginot Line, situated about 18 kilometers northeast of Haguenau in the Alsace region. Constructed in the early 1930s as part of France's defensive fortification against potential German invasion, the complex extends deep underground with a network of tunnels, casemates, artillery blocks, and a narrow-gauge railway system reaching depths of up to 30 meters. During the German western offensive in June 1940, the garrison held out for weeks and only surrendered after the armistice — on direct orders — making it one of the few Maginot works never taken by force. Guided tours lead visitors through the original crew quarters, engine rooms, and gun chambers, all remarkably intact. Open daily 09:30–16:00, paid admission.
