Atatürk Monument

The equestrian statue on Izmir's Kordon seafront depicts Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Turkish Republic, mounted on a rearing bronze horse atop a marble plinth. Unveiled in 1932 — less than a decade after the Republic's proclamation — it is among Turkey's earliest Atatürk monuments and is dedicated to the Turkish War of Independence, during which Izmir was recaptured in 1922 as the conflict's final major act. Standing on Cumhuriyet Bulvarı (Republic Avenue) just 60 metres from the Aegean Gulf, it anchors the city's most prominent waterfront promenade. At sunset, locals and visitors gather here with views across the Aegean, making it a place where national symbolism and everyday Izmir life occupy exactly the same ground.
