Basmane railway station

Basmane station, opened in 1866 during the late Ottoman period, is one of Izmir's two main railway terminals and doubles as a metro interchange. Its name derives from the Turkish basma-hane — meaning 'printing house' — a reference to the textile manufacturers who once occupied the surrounding district. All TCDD intercity trains serving Izmir terminate here, including services from Ankara, Bandırma, and Konya, alongside regional trains to Aegean hinterland towns such as Denizli, Söke, and Tire. The 19th-century historicist station building sits at the edge of the dense Basmane bazaar quarter and remains the primary arrival point for travelers coming to Izmir from the interior of Turkey.
