Priene

Priene is one of the best-preserved Hellenistic city sites in Asia Minor, set on a dramatic rocky plateau above what was once a coastal inlet of the Maeander River in present-day Aydın province, Turkey. Refounded in the 4th century BC on a strict hippodamian grid — one of antiquity's clearest examples of deliberate urban planning — the city's street layout remains legible across the hillside to this day. The Temple of Athena Polias, designed by the architect Pytheos as a canonical model of the Ionic order, was famously dedicated by Alexander the Great during his campaign through Asia Minor. Five columns of the temple still stand, alongside a compact bouleuterion, a small theatre, and long stretches of the original street grid. The panoramic view from the site's edge over the flat Maeander plain — now silted farmland where an ancient bay once reached the city walls — gives a visceral sense of how dramatically the landscape has shifted over two millennia.
