Atwater Library

The Atwater Library in Westmount, Montréal, is the oldest subscription library service in Canada, founded in 1828 — nearly four decades before Confederation. It operates as a privately run, nonprofit community institution, a model that has kept it independent from government funding through two centuries of urban change. The building is a designated National Historic Site of Canada. Today it runs a general lending library, the Montreal Children's Library, and an adult computer and continuing-education centre. Open until 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, with weekend hours on Saturdays; the building is fully wheelchair accessible and offers free Wi-Fi.
