Auerberg

The Auerberg rises to 1,055 metres above the Allgäu foothills and is nicknamed the Schwäbische Rigi after the celebrated Swiss panoramic peak. At its summit stands the baroque pilgrimage church of St. Georg, whose foundations overlie one of the most significant Roman-era sites in southwestern Bavaria — excavations have uncovered a Gallo-Roman settlement and a temple precinct on the hilltop. The church terrace opens onto an unobstructed panorama stretching from the Allgäu Alps to the Ammergau and Zillertal ranges. Well-marked hiking trails make the summit accessible for families, with the shortest ascent from the village of Stötten taking around 30 minutes.
