Alpspitze

The Alpspitze rises to 2,628 metres in the Wetterstein range and is instantly recognisable by its sharply pyramidal silhouette, which has made it the defining landmark of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The peak is composed largely of Wetterstein limestone from the Upper Triassic period, giving it its pale colouring and knife-edged ridges. Alpinists were drawn to its north face as a classic technical route as early as the 19th century; today the area is also accessible via the Alpspitzbahn cable car and the AlpspiX steel walkway cantilevered over the void. From the summit cross, the view spans the Zugspitze massif, the Karwendel, and on clear days reaches as far as the Dolomites.
