Church of the Savior on Blood

Built over Alexander II's assassination site (1912), Neo-Russian style, 7,500m2 interior mosaics.

The Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood is one of St. Petersburg's most recognisable landmarks and a masterpiece of Neo-Russian style, built 1883-1912 on the site of the assassination of Tsar Alexander II. Designed by Alfred Parland, it is famous for its 7,500 square metres of interior mosaics — one of the largest mosaic collections in Europe. The name refers to the Tsar's blood: the church stands directly over the cobblestone where he was fatally wounded.
