Postwar Modernism
The Kanumuseum at the Augsburger Eiskanal chronicles the history of canoe slalom and the world's oldest purpose-built artificial whitewater course, constructed for the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics. The canal in Augsburg's Spickel district was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2019, as part of the broader 'Augsburg Water Management System' reflecting the city's centuries-long mastery of hydraulic engineering. The museum traces how an Olympic-era facility became a permanent international competition venue still in active use today. The building is a listed Bavarian monument.
