Herzogenburg Priory

Herzogenburg Priory is an Augustinian Canons monastery continuously inhabited since its foundation in 1101, located in the Lower Austrian town of Herzogenburg about 20 kilometres northeast of St. Pölten. Established at the initiative of Bishop Ulrich I of Passau, the priory grew into a major ecclesiastical and cultural centre of the Tulln Basin throughout the medieval period. Like many Austrian monasteries, its Gothic core was extensively remodelled and expanded during the Baroque era, giving the complex its layered architectural character. Today the priory houses a museum spanning nine centuries of artistic heritage — altarpieces, goldsmiths' work, and a substantial monastic library. The monastery remains a living religious community and receives visitors through guided tours of the church, cloisters, and garden grounds.
