Abbatiale de Romainmôtier

The abbey church of Romainmôtier is one of the most significant Romanesque sacred buildings in Switzerland, protected as a Class A cultural asset of national importance. The monastery traces its origins to the 5th century and was taken over in the 10th century by Cluny, the Burgundian congregation that drove one of medieval Europe's most influential monastic reform movements. The surviving church dates primarily from the 11th and 12th centuries and retains characteristic Cluniac Romanesque features: heavy round-arched arcades, a partial cloister, and a crypt. The village of Romainmôtier-Envy amounts to little more than the abbey itself — visitors who make the detour into the Vaud countryside find a stillness that urban churches rarely offer.
