Church of San Domenico Maggiore
Naples
The Basilica di San Domenico in Bologna, founded in 1228, houses the tomb of Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, who died in the adjacent monastery in 1221 — the same building where the order held its first general chapters. The elaborate marble tomb, known as the Arca di San Domenico, was created by successive masters over two centuries; a young Michelangelo contributed three figurines between 1494 and 1495, an early commission often overlooked beside his later Roman works. Architecturally the church layers Romanesque foundations with Gothic vaulting and Renaissance chapels, reflecting the building's seven centuries of continuous use. Designated an Italian national monument, it retains a genuinely devotional atmosphere far quieter than Bologna's more touristed landmarks.
