Rolduc

Rolduc Abbey sits just across the Dutch-German border in Kerkrade, Netherlands, a short drive from Aachen, and stands as one of the most intact Romanesque monastic complexes in the Benelux region. Founded around 1104 by Ailbert of Antoing, an Augustinian canon, the complex took its current form largely during the 12th and early 13th centuries. The three-aisled crypt beneath the collegiate church, with its carved column capitals, is among the oldest surviving church crypts in the wider region. Napoleon's secularization edicts of 1797 ended monastic life here, and the abbey subsequently served as a seminary, a boarding school, and now a conference and hotel venue. Visitors can walk the Romanesque cloister, explore the richly furnished church, and wander the formal abbey gardens — a quiet counterpoint to the heavily industrialized Euregio landscape outside its walls.
