Baelo Claudia

Baelo Claudia is one of the best-preserved Roman towns on the Iberian Peninsula, set directly on the Atlantic at Playa de Bolonia, roughly 17 kilometres northwest of Tarifa. At its height between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD, the town was a major production centre for garum — the pungent fermented fish sauce traded across the Roman Empire as a luxury condiment. The ruins include a forum, basilica, three temples, a theatre, and a row of fish-salting workshops that once operated at the shoreline. Protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, the site includes an on-site museum. Visitors walk through a legible Roman street grid against a backdrop of the open Atlantic — an unusually dramatic setting for an archaeological park.
