Aussichtsturm Wanne

The Wanne observation tower stands on the 778-metre Wanne summit east of Villingen and is considered one of the oldest surviving steel lattice towers in the world. Built in 1888 by a local cooperative, the construction was carried out by the Villingen bell foundry Grüninger — an unusual assignment for a casting workshop. The 30-metre tower is distinguished by its octagonal cross-section, a design it shares with the slightly older Büchenbronner tower of 1883, and rare among steel lattice structures of the era. It is a listed cultural monument of Baden-Württemberg. Three stacked viewing platforms offer wide panoramas across the Black Forest on clear days, and admission is free.
