Argamum

Argamum, known in antiquity as Orgame, is one of the oldest Greek colonial settlements on the Black Sea coast, situated on a peninsula at the edge of Romania's Danube Delta in the Dobruja region near the village of Jurilovca. The site was most likely founded in the 7th century BC by Milesian Greeks and subsequently expanded under Roman and Byzantine rule — stretches of defensive wall, tower foundations, and ceramic fragments spanning multiple periods remain visible across the site today. Its plateau position was strategically chosen to command views over the Danube distributaries. Listed as a protected historical monument in Romania, Argamum is archaeologically documented but remains largely undeveloped for tourism, offering visitors a rare encounter with a layered ancient settlement set against the wide steppe landscape of the Dobruja.
