Temple of Bel

The Temple of Bel was the spiritual heart of ancient Palmyra, an oasis city in the Syrian desert, dedicated to the Mesopotamian deity Bēl and completed in 32 CE. Its architecture fused Syrian, Parthian, and Greco-Roman traditions into a singular whole — the cella's two thalami, aligned on a transverse axis, followed a Near Eastern sanctuary plan that set it apart from any purely classical temple. On 30 August 2015, fighters of the so-called Islamic State methodically detonated the temple; only the massive outer enclosure wall survived the blast. The remaining ruins stand today as a document of deliberate cultural destruction, a loss archaeologists and orientalists regard as irreversible, and a sober reminder of the fragility of ancient heritage in conflict zones.
