Valea Vișeului railway station

Valea Vișeului station sits in northwestern Romania and functions as a border crossing point to Ukraine on the Sighetu Marmației–Ivano-Frankivsk line. Its main technical distinction is the coexistence of broad gauge (1,520 mm, Ukrainian standard) and standard gauge (1,435 mm): trains arriving from Ukraine undergo a bogie exchange here, a procedure inherited from Soviet-era border engineering practiced across Eastern Europe. A separate standard-gauge branch also departs toward Borșa. For most travellers the station is a transit stop; for railway enthusiasts, the gauge-change facility offers a rare look at the infrastructure legacy of Cold War-era border crossings.
