Welkenraedt railway station
Railway History
Helmstedt railway station sits on the Braunschweig–Magdeburg line and served until 1990 as one of the main rail crossing points between West Germany and the GDR. Westbound and eastbound passengers faced extensive customs checks here, making the station a routine Cold War bottleneck for anyone travelling between the two German states. Today it functions as an ordinary regional stop; little on-site documentation marks its former role as a border checkpoint.
