Baluran

Baluran is a dormant andesitic volcano at the northeastern tip of Java, set within Baluran National Park — one of Indonesia's smallest yet ecologically diverse protected areas. Its defining feature is a horseshoe-shaped crater open to the northeast, likely the result of an ancient sector collapse rather than a conventional eruption; no scientifically confirmed eruptions are on record, lending the volcano an air of geological ambiguity. The surrounding park is sometimes called 'Little Africa in Java' for its open dry savannas, where herds of deer, banteng wild cattle, and peacocks roam against a volcanic backdrop. Hikers can reach elevated viewpoints along the crater rim through a transition of monsoon forest and rainforest that rewards those willing to explore on foot.
