Arjuno-Welirang

The Arjuno-Welirang complex is an active volcanic massif in East Java, roughly 30 kilometers north of Malang, comprising two principal summits — Arjuno (3,339 m) and Welirang (3,156 m) — alongside several satellite craters. Welirang's active fumaroles have supported traditional sulfur mining for generations, with miners still carrying loads of raw sulfur by hand from the crater rim, a practice also documented at the nearby Ijen volcano. In Javanese tradition, high peaks like Arjuno are considered sacred spaces; Hindu-Javanese ritual offerings are still brought to the summits during certain ceremonies. Trekkers typically depart from Tretes or Lawang, completing the ascent over two to three days through dense tropical montane forest. The summit rewards climbers with sweeping sunrise panoramas across the East Javanese plain and a ring of neighboring volcanic peaks.
