Bagana

Bagana is a 1,867-metre stratovolcano dominating the interior of Bougainville Island and ranks among the most persistently active volcanoes in Melanesia. Its symmetrical cone was built up through successive andesitic lava flows rather than explosive ejection, giving it a geological profile unusual among Pacific volcanoes. The eruption style is characterised by a near-continuous, slow extrusion of viscous lava down the flanks — though larger explosive events with pyroclastic flows do occur, most recently in July 2023. Glowing lava channels and ash plumes are visible from considerable distances on clear days. Trekking to the summit is logistically demanding and should only be attempted during quieter phases with experienced local guides.
