Barbar Temple

The Barbar Temple, located near the village of Barbar on the northern coast of Bahrain, is one of the most significant surviving monuments of the Dilmun civilization, a Bronze Age culture that flourished across the Persian Gulf during the third and second millennia BCE. A Danish archaeological team excavated the site between 1954 and 1961, then deliberately reburied it to protect the masonry from further erosion — it was re-excavated in 1983 and has been open to visitors since. The temple shows at least three successive building phases layered on top of one another, suggesting prolonged ritual use, possibly as a freshwater shrine dedicated to the Sumerian god Enki. Now on Bahrain's UNESCO World Heritage tentative list, the open-air ruin offers one of the few direct encounters with a pre-Islamic Gulf civilization that otherwise left little visible trace.
