Barony Rosendal

Baroniet Rosendal is Norway's only barony — a baroque manor house set on the shores of the Hardangerfjord in the small village of Rosendal, framed by manicured parkland and snow-capped peaks. The barony was established in 1678 when Ludvig Rosenkrantz acquired the estate through marriage and elevated it to Norway's sole genuine barony, a title that always stood as an anomaly in the country's otherwise egalitarian social order. After the baronial line died out, the property passed to the University of Oslo, which now administers it as a protected heritage site. The grounds include a historic rose garden and parkland paths stretching toward the fjord. Guided tours of the manor house are available, and the surrounding valley serves as a gateway to the Folgefonna National Park for hikers.
