The Basílica de Nossa Senhora das Neves serves as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paraíba in the historic center of João Pessoa, dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows, patron saint of the state. A place of worship has stood on this site since 1586, when the city was founded, making it one of the oldest Christian sites in Brazil. The current eclectic-style structure — the fourth church built on this exact spot — dates from the late 19th century and was granted the title of minor basilica in 1981. The building reflects the layered religious and colonial heritage of northeastern Brazil and remains the focal point of Catholic life in Paraíba, including major Marian feast-day processions.
